One of the nicest places we’ve ever visited during our stay in Maine is the Belgrade Lakes region. If I’m accurate, I think there’s actually a town called Belgrade Lakes. If not a town, then a tiny village that’s sandwiched between two towns; one above and one below. The one to the south is called Belgrade and one to the north is called Rome. It’s the Lakes area that’s the nicest. It actually reminds me a lot of Westchester County in New York. There’s a bit of money in the homes and properties there and that’s nice to see. And just so you know, the Belgrade Lakes region consists of a chain of lakes as well as the land surrounding them. The lakes are: East Pond, North Pond, Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee Lake, McGrath Pond, and Salmon Pond.
Laura and I visited this area yesterday after our hike up Mount Phillip in Rome. We stopped by Day’s Country Store for some coffee and then we strolled around in the tiny little Peninsula Park that’s right off Augusta Road, otherwise known at Rt. 27. This park is quite nice. Yes, it’s small, but it offers a lot of scenery and beauty. Every time we visit this area, we walk into this park to take a few photos. We actually visited this very park previously after traveling to Camden, Maine. I’ll post those photos below the first batch.
Please let me know if you’ve ever spent any time in the Belgrade Lakes region or if you have any comments or questions about it. It really is a fun place to be.

This next section was actually part of a blog post I previously wrote about visiting the incredibly lovely town of Camden, Maine. Laura and I spent nearly the entire day there and on the way back, we stopped by Peninsula Park in Belgrade Lakes to take some photos. It was during the golden hour, so the lighting was just perfect. What a time we had. We were able to capture some scenes of a few fellas out on Long Pond doing some fishing and we took some photos of the park and other parts of the lake as well. It’s such a beautiful place.
Right toward the north end of the village of Belgrade Lakes and off the side of Route 27 is a small waterfall. Behind that waterfall is the prettiest and smoothest water you’ll ever see. Actually, the movie On Golden Pond is claimed to be based on this area. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be; the area is quite tranquil and just perfect for the setting of a movie like that.
There’s a parking area right off the road that leads to the tiny Peninsula Park.
This is the small man-made waterfall. Perhaps it isn’t a waterfall so much as it is a water barrier.
Much of the reason for stopping at the park this particular day was to photograph some boaters out on the lake. They were fishing and having a seemingly good time. The golden hour I referred to above is evidenced in this photo as well as some of the others below.
It was so nice and so much fun taking photos of these guys. Here’s one more.
The shoreline of this lake is beautiful as well. It’s not tough to find a photogenic location.
Across the street is just as wonderful. There’s a cove that leads to Great Pond. This is what leads out to the greater lake.
And this is the area that sits up against the road.
I hope you enjoyed the above photos. Like I said, the area begs to be taken advantage of and we do every time we pass through. If you have comments or questions, please leave them down below. Thanks!
