Adding and editing a Fusion title in the Cut page in Resolve is much like adding and editing a basic title. I’ll walk through the process below, but really, it’s just a matter of dragging a title down to the timeline and then customizing the title properties the way you want in the Inspector. It’s very straightforward.
Like my last tutorial, I’ll work through a simple project to show exactly how the process of adding a Fusion title to the timeline works.
How to Add a Fusion Title to the Timeline
To start, I’ll click on the Titles link in the upper left corner of the workspace and then I’ll scroll down find a Fusion title I’m interested in. These will all be under the Fusion heading in the panel. For today’s project, I’ll select the Fade On title. Remember, the Fusion titles are already animated, so not much animation needs to be done to them.
Next, I’ll click and drag that title down to the timeline. I’ll drop the title directly above the video clips already in the current timeline, where I’d like to see the title perform.
Like the basic titles, the Fusion titles last about five seconds by default. In my case, I reduced the duration by clicking and dragging the right side of the title to the left. I also clicked directly on the title and dragged the entire thing to the right, so it’s not lined up with the video clips.
Editing the Title Text & Properties
My goal for this title is for it to show the name of the location the video clips were recorded. In this case, I filmed these clips in Harpswell, Maine. I’d like the first short video clip to play and then as the second and third are playing, I’d like to see the words HARPSWELL, MAINE fade in, grow, and then fade out to a blur. I’d also like to see the ending of this animated title over a black background, so I’ll need to make sure the video clips have already ended while the title is still going.
To accomplish all this, I’ll head over to the Inspector panel link in the upper right corner and click.
I’ll then update the text to read HARPSWELL, MAINE and I’ll change the font to Open Sans Condensed. I’ll increase the font size to .1024 and decrease the tracking to .905. I’ll also center the title in the monitor so the V Anchor value is -.87. You can see all of these values in the above graphic.
Adding a Transition
Because the video clips will end abruptly while the title animation is still playing, I’d like to add a smooth fade to black transition to the final video clip. To do this, I’ll head to the Transitions link in the upper left area of the workspace and select the Dip To Color Dissolve transition.
I’ll then click and drag that transition down to the timeline and drop it right at the end of the final video clip. The timeline will look like this:
In the above graphic, you can see the tan title block above the three colored video clips. You can also see the transition highlighted in the last video clip. I shortened that transition a bit by clicking and dragging the left side of it to the right.
The Final Video
Now that all the work has been done, let’s take a look at a screenshot of the video. The text at the center is a static view of the Fade On Fusion title.
Now let’s take a look at the demo video itself. Click to play.
That’s all for now. If you have any questions regarding how to add a Fusion title to a project timeline and then edit it after the fact in the Cut page of DaVinci Resolve, please ask in the comment section below. Thanks!
