Quill Hill is one of western Maine’s best enjoyed assets. It’s a mountaintop that’s easily accessible to just about anyone. You can drive a regular car, a truck, ATV, side-by-side – whatever you’d like – even an RV, up the well maintained (smooth) dirt road. The land (mountain) is privately owned, so it’s important to respect it, and if you can, donate to it to keep the road and lookout area in top shape. The peak of the mountain boasts an elevation of 2848′ and it offers 360° views. If you’re in the area, it’s a definite must visit. In this post, you’ll read about our trip to Quill Hill and you’ll find photos of the stunning scenery. The area truly is magical and an autumn visit is surely worth the time and effort. Damariscotta, Maine
Damariscotta, Maine is a great little riverfront town that’s got a nice handful of features to enjoy. Since the town sits so close to the river, you can visit that; there are plenty of photo ops in the area. There’s also a wonderful pub (along with other restaurants) for lunch and a few stores for shopping, including Reny’s. There’s even Lincoln Theater, if you’d like to take in a movie or show. Overall, Damariscotta is quite the picturesque place to be. It’s Maine in a nutshell. In this post, I share a few pictures from our visit. Enjoy! Continue reading…
Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Boothbay Harbor is a worthy town to visit in Maine. It’s on the coast and it offers tons of things to do and see. Boothbay Harbor is definitely a tourist town, so be ready for people and activities during the summer months. It’s a destination that shouldn’t be overlooked during a day trip or a vacation to the state. What’s in store for you if you visit? Think schooner rides and deep sea fishing. Art galleries and shopping. Wandering around the lovely Main Street and stopping off for ice cream. The coast of Maine in the summer or fall isn’t to be missed. In this post, I share a bit of commentary as well as quite a few photos of this location. Click through to enjoy. Continue reading…
Belgrade Lakes, Maine
Belgrade Lakes is a region that includes two towns; Rome and Belgrade, Maine. It also consists of seven lakes. The lakes are: East Pond, North Pond, Great Pond, Long Pond, Messalonskee Lake, McGrath Pond, and Salmon Pond. It’s a wonderful area that we visit often. It’s host to some of the best hiking in Maine and some of the most spectacular views of the lovely lakes. Nestled between the two towns as well as the two lakes of Great Pond and Long Pond is the village of Belgrade Lakes (yes, it’s a village too). And nestled within that village is a tiny, yet very special place, called Peninsula Park. In this post, I’ll share some photos of the park as well as the surrounding lakes and area. I hope you enjoy. Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Maine
The most quintessentially New England destination I’ve visited thus far in Maine has got to be the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. Hands down. This lighthouse is “it.” It’s the one so many tourists visit each year and it’s the one that’s photographed and posted on websites, in magazines, and contained in tourist literature alike. It’s beautiful and picturesque and everything in between. On a lovely November afternoon, Laura and I visited this lighthouse specifically to take photos of it. We weren’t disappointed in any way when we arrived. We took many photos, some of which I share in this post. Please click through to read my commentary on our visit as well as view pictures of the lighthouse and the surrounding area. Continue reading…
Somesville Bridge, Maine
Somesville bridge can easily be categorized as the most popular bridge in the state of Maine. Or at least the most photographed. That’s the claim out there and I tend to agree with it. It seems as though I can’t get away from pictures of this bridge. They’re all over social media and tourism literature. It was only a matter of time until I visited for myself. Luckily, it’s not to far away from home. On a beautiful November morning, Laura and I ventured to Somesville, which is located on Mount Desert Island, near Acadia. Since we visited during the month of November, very few people were on the island and we were able to take as many photos as we liked, unencumbered. The bridge was everything it’s cracked up to be; it’s lovely, tranquil, and was built with photography in mind. In this post, I share some photos of the bridge and surrounding area as well as commentary about our visit. Continue reading…
Freeport & Brunswick, Maine
Freeport, Maine is a tourist town that offers lots to do. First and foremost, the flagship L.L. Bean store is located right at its center. From it, there are many small shops and restaurants that’ll keep you busy for hours. The shops range from gift and candy stores to boutiques that sell clothing and chocolates all the way to outlets that offer incense and other hippy paraphernalia. Also, if you’ve never seen a McDonalds that’s housed in a historic colonial home, you’ll need to stop by. Just a short drive north on Route 1 is another town called Brunswick. Larger than Freeport, Brunswick offers a much more busy “Maine Street” as well as many more shops and restaurants. During our visit to both of these locations, we explored many of the finer points they had to offer. From Cameron’s Lobster House to Bull Moose to Mexicali Blues. What a great time we had. The Christmas Loft, North Conway, New Hampshire
The Christmas Loft in North Conway, New Hampshire is a destination unto itself. A person could easily spend hours at the store. Basically, it’s a model of a life sized Christmas village contained in a building. Surrounding the village are rooms that contain an extraordinary amount of Christmas items for sale, such as nutcrackers, string lights, artificial trees, decorations, model houses, and most anything else you can think of. While browsing through the product rooms is fun, it’s more fun to walk through the village. The overall room is dark and the village contains model street lamps, so the ambience is just perfect. If you’re in the White Mountains area, it’s a must see. In this post, I show off the many photos I took while visiting the store myself. Take a look at them to get a feel for what’s going on and then plan to stop by to get in the Christmas spirit. Continue reading…
Zeb’s General Store, North Conway, New Hampshire
Zeb’s General Store is located at 2675 White Mountain Hwy, North Conway, New Hampshire. If you’ve never been to Zeb’s, you’re in for a surprise. It’s one of the coolest places on the planet and if you find old fashioned candy, foods, touristy items, and home goods exciting, you’ll be thrilled to see the photos I’ve shared in this post. Laura and I have stopped by this location a number of times and it’s so much fun to see what the staff has to offer. The store is open most of the year and they’ve got an active Facebook page to keep their customers up to date if it needs to close for any reason. If you’re ever in or new North Conway, be sure to stop by Zeb’s. You won’t be sorry. Continue reading…
North Conway, New Hampshire
North Conway lies at the heart of the White Mountain recreational area of New Hampshire. It’s the town many folks call home during their year-round vacations. The village is jumping with activity during most of every season. Its Main Street is lined with stores and the greater area is host to quite a few activities. Think hiking, horseback riding, kayaking and canoeing, sightseeing, and so much more. I’m not sure you’ll having a moment of downtime if you do decide to make your way to this part of the world.
